Why a Holiday in August is Good for Your Mental Health

Brent Munro, Clinical Psychologist

August might not seem like the obvious time for a holiday, but for people living in Perth, it can be the perfect window to reset. Mentally, it’s a critical point in the year—far enough from the Christmas break that the stress of work, family demands, and everyday pressures may be building, yet still months away from the typical end-of-year slowdown. Taking a break now isn’t indulgent; it’s smart, preventative self-care.

From a psychological perspective, August holidays can reduce the risk of burnout, especially for those in high-stress jobs or parenting roles. When we push through the middle of the year without pausing, our capacity for stress tolerance and emotional regulation gradually drops. A mid-year holiday can restore energy, lift mood, and improve focus—offering benefits long after the bags are unpacked.

There are also practical and financial perks: flights and accommodation are often cheaper than during the December peak, and travel crowds are thinner. For those tempted by a European summer, August offers ideal weather—warm days, lively festivals, and a refreshing change from Perth’s grey winter. But you don’t need to leave the state to experience the mental health benefits of a getaway.

Holidaying within WA in August has its own unique charm. Head north—to Broome, Exmouth, or the Kimberley—for warm weather and blue skies. Or go south to embrace the season: think log fires, forest walks, good wine, and time to slow down. Whether you’re seeking sun or a cozy recharge, the act of stepping out of routine and giving yourself space is what counts most.

So if you’re feeling flat, fatigued, or “just getting through”—consider August as your time to pause and refuel. Your mental health (and future self) will thank you.
